Most hijabs at Shailah measure 214 x 106 cm, a size the product pages call «كبير» (large), and some pieces also come in «صغير» (small), 214 x 69 cm. The length is the same in both; only the width differs. This guide explains each figure and shows you how to measure a hijab you own so you can compare it with the listed size before ordering.

What do large and small mean in a hijab size?

OptionLengthWidthWhere it appears
Large (كبير)214 cm106 cmMost everyday and plain hijabs
Small (صغير)214 cm69 cmSome pieces only, depending on the design

Many plain Duja Al-Lail (دجى الليل) hijabs, such as DS4-76, have an option called «حجم الشيلة» (hijab size) that holds both sizes; which sizes are in stock varies from piece to piece, and some come in one size only. Other pieces offer both sizes too, including KS1-09, TC1-05, LL-03 and MN1-02. Plain Cotton Voile pieces such as SD6-224 and SD6-225 show the «حجم الشيلة» option with a single value, large.

The 106 cm width leaves enough fabric to wrap around the head with the end falling freely over the shoulders, as the About page explains. That is why the larger width is called large; the length does not change between the two options.

What does wide mean in a product name?

Many titles carry the word «عريضة» (wide), such as «شيلة مطرزة تيفاني عريضة» CB1-01 and «شيل بيت عريضة جوري روز» RZ6-36, both 106 cm wide. But the word is a general pointer, not a fixed size: «شيلة وصايف سودة بشغل رمادي عريضة» TC1-05 comes in both sizes. In the other direction, TE1-01 carries «عرض أقصر» (shorter width) in its name and measures 214 x 69 cm. The figure in the description or the size option is the one to rely on.

How to measure a hijab you own at home

  1. Lay the piece flat on a bed or table with no folds, and straighten the edges.
  2. Run the tape along the long edge from end to end; this is the length.
  3. Measure the short edge the same way; this is the width.
  4. Wear the piece as you usually do, and notice how much of the width goes into the front fold and how much hangs free. This tells you whether 69 cm is enough for you or you need 106 cm.
  5. Save both figures on your phone so you can compare them with any piece before ordering.

A tailor's tape suits light fabric better than a metal rule, because it follows the cloth without stretching it.

Sizes that differ from the usual

  • Prayer hijabs: 215 x 254 cm, one size per design, such as SL-267 and SL-262. They are much longer and wider than an everyday hijab; the prayer hijab guide covers them in detail.
  • Bridal hijab SHQ-05: «شيلة ناعم العود» measures 215 x 70 cm; the other SHQ descriptions give no size.
  • Sizes in older descriptions: some descriptions give the size as «الطول وارين وربع، العرض وار وربع» (length two and a quarter yards, width one and a quarter yards) rather than in centimetres, as on SD1-136. The «حجم الشيلة» option on the same piece shows the size in centimetres, large 214 x 106 cm, so rely on the option figure.

Before you order

  • Compare the two listed figures with the piece you measured.
  • If you see a «حجم الشيلة» option, choose the width you are used to.
  • If the size of a particular piece is unclear, ask through the contact page and mention its code.
  • The return policy accepts an unworn, unused piece with its original tags and packaging within 14 days of receipt, after prior approval, so measure and compare the piece before wearing it or removing its tags.

Common questions

What is the usual Emirati shayla size at Shailah?

The usual size is 214 x 106 cm, meaning 214 cm long and 106 cm wide. It is the size of most pieces at Shailah, including plain Cotton Voile pieces such as SD6-224. That width leaves enough fabric to wrap around the head with the end falling over the shoulders, and some pieces also come in a 69 cm width.

What is the difference between the large and small size?

Only the width: large is 106 cm wide and small is 69 cm wide, and the length is 214 cm in both. Small suits you if you wrap with a shallower front fold and prefer less fabric; large suits you if you need a doubled fold at the front or a longer fall over the shoulders.

Do all hijabs come in two sizes?

Only some pieces come in two sizes. Plain Cotton Voile pieces such as SD6-224 and SD6-225 come in one size, large. Many plain Duja Al-Lail DS pieces offer two widths, 69 cm and 106 cm, in the «حجم الشيلة» option; what is in stock varies from piece to piece, and some come in one size only. Pieces such as KS1-09 and TC1-05 also offer both sizes, so look for that option before ordering.

How do I know which width suits me?

Measure the piece you wear most and note its width, then notice how much fabric goes into the front fold when you wrap it. If your piece is 106 cm wide and suits you, choose large; if you always fold away a large part of the width, small at 69 cm may be enough.
